The 7th annual, 6th running Nolhtairt attracted a team of 22 competitors to a cloudy Coquina Beach. Mike Shane and Michele Schenk were the first to arrive.
The bikes started arriving and I couldn't help noticing Frank's vintage 70's ten speed.
I'm sure these shifters were cutting edge in their day.
As were my down tube shifters on my vintage 80's Cannondale, aka my guest bike.
And now we have 90's technology on the brakes on Pete's K2.
This shot of the race director/tire inflator revealed some of the splendor of our venue.
Before we got started, we asked God to keep us safe and let us have a good time. Our prayer was answered! We then had our pre-race meeting which included a talk of the origin and history of the Nolhtairt.
Here's the field of 22 amazing competitors.
And then the run was underway.
Sabrina & Reeny below.
Dave and Frank below. Dave is one of my 10:10 Wellness Saturday morning regulars, and Frank is one of my soccer team mates - for like 14 years.
My buddy Mike still looking happy...
We ran south to Longboat Pass then turned and went under the overpass...
Then north along the hard packed frontage road - an awesome running surface. Here's Dave and Pete...
I soon encountered the run leaders - Mike and Leo...
Here's a few more run shots. Julie - our second youngest competitor, daughter of Pete and Sabrina who were both racing. That would make the Nolhtairt's first family competition. Shoulda got a picture of the fam!
FBOM's Becky, Jody, and Tom with Mike in there too. Next time you see Becky or Tom you'll have to ask them about their somewhat unorthodox halftime recovery beverage on Lido Key.
Here's Lars in his inaugural Nolhtairt appearance...
The ever happy and waving Michele...
My recovering hero Pete (he had heart bypass surgery - I think triple - less than 2 years ago)...
Just 11 years old, Lexi was the youngest ever Nolhtairt competitor. And that girl can run!
Here's Sandra, I forgot-her-name, and Denise looking a bit fatigued on the home stretch...
With the run now over for most, we began to get ready for the bike. How many "races" have you been to where they take group photos in transition? Gotta love the Nolhtairt!
We rolled our bikes to Gulf Blvd. for a very ho-hum bike start. First shot is Patty and Jody. This was the only shot I got of Jody as she disappeared into the Longboat Triangle.
Was Leo pulling Mike here?
Sabrina makes the fat tires climb over Longboat Pass...
Another fat tire competitor Dave. Does that bike look a bit small for Dave? He was supposed to ride one of my guest road bikes - but that's another story...
Here's a happy Michele with Dave pulling in to draft...
I got into a rythym of sneaking up on riders, snapping a candid shot and a parting shot. Here's Sandra...
And Frank. At 62 I think that makes Frank our most distinguished Nolhtairtlete. Nevermind his age - he'll take your legs out on the soccer field.
Here's Pete with a view...
Jackie volunteered to do road clean up. Praise God we didn't need her services!
On the way back in I perched myself on the bridge hoping to catch some shots of riders with Longboat Pass in the background. My camera skills and timing prevented me from capturing much water. Here comes Frank, Lars and Mike, and Sandra.
Another mellow transition allowed a couple of our girls to get a shot with special guest Marty Orban. He's the guy that sells a bazillion poinsettas among other things at his farm off 9th Ave.
Our fastest runner and cyclist, Mike Goreski tunes his ears before the swim.
Here's the motley swim team. Or are we swim models? At least we swam - even with noodle seats!
I brought my waterproof (to 10ft) Olympus Stylus Tough camera into the water to capture some swim photos. Unfortunately the water wasn't clear enough to get any decent underwater shots. Here's Mike and Mike.
Jackie followed along on the beach as her princess (Lexi) did the full (.4 mile) swim. I think Mom was a little relieved when Lexi made it back.
After the swim we all enjoyed some good eating. Special thanks to Chef Blake who volunteered on the grill to cook some burgers and dogs, and he made clean-up a snap.
Frank gives his vote of approval.
Leo and Mike enjoy the shade trees, comfy chairs, and plate full of food.
Finally, we had a drawing for some giveaways - rules being explained here.
And lastly, a Yoo Hoo toast to my friend and brother Boe. Boe's been to all the Nolhtairts except years 1 and 2, and you'd remember him from his 6 wonderful kids and amazing wife Connie. They moved to Wake Forest, NC last year as he's been lead to go into seminary.
The Yoo Hoo connection comes from my two day participation with him during his cross country cycling tour Christ Across America. I discovered that when riding cross country, convenience stores are sometimes your only refueling option - and Yoo Hoo makes a pretty decent one.
Thanks everyone for making this year's Nolhtairt the best ever!
